Earth Hour in Banff

Branded as the biggest environmental event in history, Earth hour sees 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries switch off their lights, as hundreds of millions of people, business and governments around the world unite to address a global issue.

As a hotel in Banff located within a National Park, we want to spread the message on how we can make our planet greener.

Between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m on Saturday the 31st of March, we are encouraging our Banff hotel guests to participate in this year’s Earth Hour by taking a few small steps to address the issue of climate change and to keep our National Park beautiful in the process.

What you can do:

•Turn off the lights in your room and enjoy dinner by candlelight or board games by your open fire.
•Turn down the thermostat in your room – not a problem when you have your fire going!
•Refrain from using any electrical appliance such as television, stereos and dishwashers.
•Make sure chargers are unplugged.
If you are in downtown Banff during Earth Hour, you can watch Banff’s Mayor ceremoniously switch off the main streetlights of the 100 and 200 block of Banff Avenue at 8:30 p.m.

Fortis will be measuring Banff’s energy use against the results of the 2010 Earth Hour results to see how much of an impact we can make.

Join in this year’s Earth Hour to take a step towards a cleaner Earth.

The Douglas Fir Resort Pet of the Year – We Have a Winner!

Never mind the Hunger Games!

It was a two dog race; battling it out to be crowned the undisputed winner to claim the prestigious title of the Douglas Fir Resort Pet of the Year. We couldn’t decide who to pick as the winner for your Banff hotel, so we put it to your vote.

With a staggering 294 Facebook ‘Likes’, the photo of a very windswept Alife took the crown! His owner tells us the photo was taken one hot summer’s day in the Rockies as they drove around Lake Minnewanka. They rolled down the window and Alfie took prime position. With his paws tightly clutched to the window, he stuck his head as far out as he could and let the wind blow through his hair.

Alfie’s owners tell us, ‘Alfie is a character and a very funny little dog. He sings along to our daughters recorder, rides on her longboard home from school and knows how to say ‘I love you’ when he wants a treat. We took him in after his previous owner couldn’t keep him anymore and he has become a true member of our family’.

Alfie wasn't available for comment at the time of print, but he was seen gorging on bacon treats in celebration of his win! He wins a two night stay at the Douglas Fir Resort & Chalets.

We would like to send a very heartfelt thanks to Captain Suki and her family for coming in a very close second with 216 votes, as well as a huge thank you to everyone who took part in our Pet of the Year competition. As a pet friendly hotel in Banff, we're celebrating by offering a Dogs Stay Free month! From April 9th – 30th all dogs stay free at the Douglas Fir Resort & Chalets. More information on can be found here. Keep your eyes peeled for more giveaways soon!

There’s nothing happier than a dog with its head out the car window.

Action Packed Banff – Top 5 Adrenaline Junkie Activities in Banff

When you think of Banff you typically picture serene views, gentle hikes and babbling brooks. What you don’t conceive are the adrenaline pumping, heart stopping, gut wrenching, bone rattling (have we made our point yet) activities on the doorstep of your Banff hotel!

Here are a few of our favourites.

Heli-Skiing - While Banff boasts some of the finest skiing in North America at any one of its three, world-class ski hills, sometimes in-resort skiing just doesn’t quite scratch that adrenaline itch. Which is probably why heli-skiing was invented! Hit your own private run to really shred through Banff’s famous powder in a personally guided tour down untracked, virgin slopes with a heli-skiing tour. Choose from 1 to 5 action packed days full of champagne powder and heart pounding runs!

Snowmobiling – Strap yourself on to 660cc's worth of roaring engine and hit the open back country as you’re let loose as the driver of your own snowmobile. Visit a 1900’s deserted mining town atop 8,000 ft. peak or cruise the high alpine bowls for some free-riding as you get a taste for a real Rocky mountain adrenaline rush.

Frozen Waterfall Ice Climbing –  Don your harness, helmet and ice-picks as you scale some of the finest frozen waterfalls in Banff National Park. Waterfall ice climbing is an unbelievably exhilarating sport and local companies cater to all abilities (beginner to advanced). Equipment is supplied.

Cave Tours –Ever wondered what lies beneath those vast mountain peaks? Take a first-hand look as you immerse yourself into the tangled underworld of cave exploring. Discover the twisting tunnels of this 4km limestone cave system on Grotto Mt. with highly trained experts as your guides. Feel your heart race as you emerge from narrow passages into open caverns within the mountain. Minimum age for this tour is 10 – 12 years.

Flight of the Rockies – You don’t have to race through the back country to get your adrenaline kick. Take the ultimate sightseeing tour as you soar over the Rocky Mountains on your personal heli-tour! Choose from 12 to 30 minute flight times which showcase Banff’s beautiful mountain vistas and remarkable lakes. You can also try to spot your Banff hotel from above!

Phew! After that you’ll be ready to kick back by your open fire at your Banff hotel to settle your nerves..until the next day! Click here to view some of the winter adrenaline activities on offer to you!
