February Festivities

ShareThis

Whether you are looking for family activities, sports events, art and culture or to tantalize your taste buds, Banff has it all on offer this February. With so much going on, we at the Douglas Fir Resort thought we’d create a list of our favorites to inspire our guests and visitors to Banff:

Mt Norquay Ski Hill
Mt Norquay has always got something going on for all ages!

This February there is no better way for the entire family to enjoy the slopes than a day of tubing, snowshoeing, and smores – and don’t forget to warm up your toes next to the fire-pit once your done. The tube park’s hours of operation are:

Wednesday:
OPEN NIGHT: 5pm – 9pm
Thursday:
OPEN DAY: 11am – 4pm
Friday:
OPEN DAY: 11am – 4pm
OPEN NIGHT: 5pm – 9pm
Saturday:
OPEN DAY: 11am – 4pm
Sunday:
OPEN DAY: 11am – 4pm

Also, we can’t forget to mention part 2 Norquay’s ‘Backyard Rail Jam Series’. The competition is open to skiers and boarders of all ages, running from 7pm till 9pm with registration starting at 5pm in customer service and the cost is $10.

Don’t forget to sign up or just watch this great competition on Friday, February 18th, 2011.

Pond Hockey on Lake Louise.
For a true Canadian experience, come and watch come and watch as teams compete for glory in the Lake Louise Pond Hockey Classic. With the glorious Rocky Mountains as the backdrop, this exclusive event will host 24 teams to compete for bragging rights and be winners of a Canadian Classic.

Whether you are a local, a Canadian or from another continent, this really is an amazing experience for the entire family – plus if you get a little chilly outside you need only walk a short distance to The Fairmont Chateau for a delicious hot chocolate!

Teams will play at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise from February 25 – 27, 2011.

Bison & Blues Winery Weekend
Come kick back by the fireplace with great wine, gourmet food, and the sounds of award winning blues as winemaker Sandra Oldfield serves up the best of Tinhorn Creek Wines alongside Kelly Long's Carmen Creek Bison accompanied by the award nominee Delta-Blues artist Marshall Lawrence for this rare weekend collaboration that will engage the senses and relax the soul.

So come for a weekend of gastronomical delights and rocking tune this Friday, February 25 – Sunday, 27, 2011.

The Banff Center
Inspiring creativity as always, The Banff Center is playing host to some incredible artists and speakers this February. These are three of my favorites:

Manaslu: Mountain of the Spirit
A part of the ‘Leading Ideas Speakers' Series’, Helen Sovdat presents her ‘image of Manaslu.’

In September 2009 Canmore’s Val Pitkethly and Helen Sovdat became the first Canadians to summit Manaslu (8163 metres), known as "Mountain of the Spirit", in Nepal. For these two long-time friends, their climb of Manaslu – the eighth highest mountain in the world – was a great achievement in celebration of their 50th birthdays.

Come and listen to Val Pitkethly while she shares images and stories from their trip this Thursday, February 10, 2011 - 7:30 pm at the Max Bell Auditorium.

Trudeau Stories
Pierre Elliott Trudeau was one of the most fascinating figures of our time – a leader who burned in the Canadian limelight. In 1985, while a student in Montreal, writer-performer Brooke Johnson became friends with Trudeau shortly after he had stepped down as Prime Minister.

Through reminiscences, journal entries, and correspondence, Johnson brings to life the story of a remarkable friendship in this very engaging theatre piece. At once vital and charming, Trudeau Stories is a private insight into the man and his times, through the eyes of a passionate artist.

Enjoy the this beautiful segment of the ‘Visiting Artists Series’ at The Banff Center this Saturday Feruary 12th, 2011 at 7:30pm

Matt Andersen
I have been hooked on this incredible Canadian blues artist since discovering his work on YouTube months ago – and he is finally visiting beautiful Banff!

His voice is large, his talent is large, and this big man can stop you in your tracks with his powerful blend of blues, roots, and rock. He has become one of the most acclaimed and sought after artists in the country.

Enjoy the ‘live’ Matt Andersen experience Sunday, February 20th, 2011.

So melt your winter woes this February with a heart-warming stay at the Douglas Fir Resort and one of these many incredible events!
